Scientific research uses in general extracted, highly purified mushroom powder to investigate the therapeutic potential of medicinal mushrooms.
ORIVeDA's powdered extracts are comparable in both composition and quality, so the research results you read about you can also expect from our extracts.

ORIVeDA ABM is not only the most potent Agaricus blazei extract commercially available but also the only fully certified extract worldwide, with guaranteed levels of the main bioactive ingredients.
For our extract we guarantee the percentage of bioactive beta-glucan and polyphenols (anti-oxidants). We no longer specify polysaccharides because this is a very broad term.
Although beta-glucan is a type of polysaccharide not all polysaccharide is beta-glucan. Unscrupulous or ignorant vendors spike their products with e.g. malto-dextrin (a filler) or -if it is a biomass product- it might contain a high percentage of useless starch. These are also polysaccharides. Read the supplement facts label to find out what is in the product (and what is not - like, low percentages of active ingredients are not listed (!) for marketing reasons).
The bioavailability is perfect because this is an extracted product. Research found that the immunological effects of mushroom extracts are up to 10 times higher when compared against non-extracted powders. Contamination is way below the thresholds - we test for 20 trace metals/minerals (including heavy metals and three radio-active isotopes).
Recommended dosage is 3 caps p/day - but also see our FAQ. A leaflet with detailed instructions and background is included with every order.
The most recent Certificates of Analysis are available on the quality control page so you can verify our quality claims.
Extracted using hot water - the main bioactives are water-solubles.
Science has been researching medicinal mushrooms for decades. Below we've listed the main targets in Agaricus blazei (ABM) research*.
Take notice: this list should not be interpreted as a list of medical claims ! For a more extensive background click here ( page opens in new window ).
A shared property of all medicinal mushrooms is said to be immune-modulation: research has been investigating their potential to normalize our natural resistance against diseases for many decades. Although undeniable proof has not yet been presented the outcome of research is promising.
In particular water-soluble beta-glucans have triggered the interest of scientists: in the EU several health-claims based on beta-glucans have been ratified in the past years by the EFSA. Beta-glucans are e.g. thought to help with immune support and with normalizing of cholesterol levels. ABM is a mushroom with very high levels of beta-glucan.
Given that our immune system is the core of our health this is very important - allergies, infections, auto-immune diseases and many old-age problems are all immune related. Also see our dedicated article about the immune system.
Two terms are worth mentioning here: adaptogenic (helping our body to adapt to the never-ending assaults on our health) and BRM (a natural Biological Response Modifier - helps to normalize the body's natural defense mechanisms without any side effects). These terms are keywords when describing medicinal mushrooms. Medicinal mushrooms do not cure or heal directly, but they help the body to perform at its best.
Harmful micro-organisms, bacteria and viruses should be neutralized by the immune system before they can cause infections and inflammations. Existing infections etc. will last considerably shorter if the immune system is functioning at its peak level.
ORIVeDA ABM contains a high level of beta-glucans. Every batch is tested for these bioactives - see the quality control page for the most recent test results. Beta-glucans are i.p. responsible for the immunological effects of medicinal mushrooms.
Research e.g. showed ABM extracts to be promising in inhibiting the infectivity of the common Herpes Simplex virus (HSV-1 - over 75% decrease) and the Bovine Herpes virus (BoHV-1 - over 51% decrease). For additional information visit our resources page.
Beta-glucans are thought to have a positive effect on a healthy cholesterol balance; as said before in the EU such health claims have even been ratified by the EFSA.
A healthy balance between LDL (bad) and HDL (good) cholesterol helps with high blood pressure and promotes a healthy cardio-vascular system: less plaque, stronger arteries. Apart from this, a clinical trial showed promising effects when investigating a direct effect on high blood pressure. There were no side effects.
The beta-glucans in ABM demonstrated anti-hyperglycemic (anti-diabetic), anti-hypertriglyceridemic (lowering blood fat), anti-hyper-cholesterolemic (lowering cholesterol), and anti-arteriosclerotic (keeping the arteries flexible and young) activity during research.
However, much more research is needed before these claims will be ratified. Until now, there are promising but not convincing results.
Despite that, these findings are very interesting for diabetic patients. Some researchers state it also may help prevent diabetes in those susceptible. Hard evidence of this is lacking, though.
ABM is used a lot in combination with standard cancer treatments such as chemo-therapy and radiation. There are claims suggesting it can neutralize in whole or in part the devastating effects these treatments have on our immune system.
If these claims are justified ABM might aid in preventing metastasis (cancer cells traveling through the bloodstream should be neutralized by the immune system before they can cause harm). ABM might be able to significantly contribute to the quality of life during and after treatment this way.
Furthermore, experimental research indicates that ABM itself also might have some anti-cancer potential. It was e.g. found to inhibit the enzyme aromatase, which has been linked to the development of breast-cancer.
But again, more research is needed before we can expect ratification of such claims.
Agressive pharmaceuticals can have a negative impact on the chemical balance of our body. Dosing of medication is often a trial and error process with at times unforeseen and unwanted side effects. Our liver is the main chemical processing plant of our body. Some treatments are extremely taxing on the liver.
ABM is a dietary supplement with liver-protecting potential (hepatoprotective) according to some publications.
The immune-modulating potential of ABM might be beneficial for those suffering from allergies, including asthma, hayfever and other seasonal allergies.
Research and feedback from our customers suggest that ABM may help to prevent allergy development and shows promise in case of several established allergies.
But be aware - this is not a medication or a 'magic cure' - like all medicinal mushrooms ABM is a so-called 'nutraceutical' - a food which shows therapeutic potential.
ABM extracts have no noteworthy side effects at all. The lack of side effects is due to the fact that mushroom extracts work mainly in an indirect way: as a natural BRM (a Biological Response Modifier - stimulating the body's natural defense mechanisms). ABM does not contain agressive chemical substances.
There is no potential disturbance of the body's chemical and hormonal balance. This makes medicinal mushrooms extracts such as ABM ideal dietary supplements for everybody.
The only contra-indications are immune-suppressing medicines (e.g. after a transplant). Never use medicinal mushroom extracts together with this type of medication - the immune modulating potential might neutralize its workings.
There are also reports that ABM extracts might increase the risk of hypoglycemia (blood sugar levels that fall too low) in people that are sensitive to that, such as those taking diabetes medicines like insulin. Taking it together with some sugar-containing beverage such as fresh juice will help.
